Start at Council House Left Lion – Thursday 5th June 2025 – 17:30
Practical pointers: aim to pray in groups of about 6.
Prayer pointers: we’ve provided a suggested route and a number of prayer focus areas on this sheet – please follow the wind of the Spirit as you pray – linger, move on, add stuff, skip stuff – that’s all fine!
There is powerful authority as we agree in prayer in 2’s and 3’s (or in 6’s!). As we prayer walk the city centre, you’ll probably sense the weight of the need, and the strength of standing together.
We’re hearing stories of hearts being stirred all over the city at this time – “in the season of rain, we’re asking God for even more rain” (Zech 10:1). Notice how your heart gets moved as you pray, and follow the Spirit’s lead in those areas that animate you.
Council House - representing local government. Nottingham City Council have a large financial challenge to manage. The whole system of local authorities is under review (the local government reorganisation that’s planned to be in place by 2029) – full proposals have to be submitted by end Nov 2025.
“Lord, we cry to You for wisdom as to where services must be prioritised during difficult budgeting, and we ask for your help with the significant change in the Unitary Authority plans needed by end Nov ’25.”
Police - representing law & order. We’re believing for our city to be blessed with the kind of “abundant peace” that gets attention elsewhere. We’re grateful that policing has been taken out of special measures recently – and whilst progress is being made with violent crime, we need help with knives!
“We ask that you strengthen the Police who serve our city for the sake of peace.
We bless the Chief Officer Team - Kate Meynell (currently on sick leave), Steve Cooper, Rob Griffin and also Gary Godden (Police and Crime Commissioner)”
Refugees & people seeking asylum - Britannia Hotel is just one of the sites that accommodate people who have left everything behind, in search of a better, safer life. Many get ‘stuck’ in the system and suffer with significant depression, as their lives are ‘on hold’. (NB – please allow some distance when you pray)
“May refugees find a welcome in our city. May Nottingham be a city of safety to those in need. May refugees be able to establish a new flourishing life for themselves here.”
Castle - At the turn of the millennium in 2000, the united church gathered in the Market Square, and at Easter a flag was raised at the Castle declaring ‘Jesus is Lord, this is His City’. The Castle now enjoys many visitors since its refurb – we want our city to be attractive. Robin Hood’s reputation is very widely known – we’d love Nottingham to be known for the King’s glory too!
“Today, we swing wide the doors of our city – that the King of Glory might come in” (Psalm 24)
St Nic’s is a flourishing church, that resources the city. It has invested heavily in diversity, and is now home to a thriving Spanish church that’s part of the broader St Nic’s family. We’re convinced that God’s glory in Nottingham will be displayed through the diversity of the church – all colours and cultures adding beauty to the mix, and demonstrating the potential of a better life together. Steve Silvester also operates as a father to the city, wanting to see the Church united, God’s power released, and the City blessed.
“Lord, would you enable your Church to fulfil her destiny as we serve this city. Please open the door for the gospel to spread across all ethnicities and ages. Open our eyes and our hearts to embrace the beauty that diversity offers. And strengthen Steve (& Nottingham City Prayer) in the work toward Church unity”
Broadmarsh has a profound history. There was a Franciscan friary on this site for 300 years, though during the Industrial revolution, it became one of the worst slums ‘in the world’! We persistently bless this area, as we long for its redemption – from a place of despair to a place of hope and life.
As we pause in this spot, our prayers can be inspired by what we see around us – the art of Nottingham Contemporary, education at Nottingham College, beauty of Theatre that takes place at the Library, along with many other activities in the Library that bring life to the city. And thankfully, we have the beauty of the Green Heart – a much-desired site of natural beauty in the city centre, and a far cry from the concrete of this area’s past.
“Lord – we believe you have a better word to declare over the Broadmarsh – restoring beauty and hope. Help us to join your prayer, as we pay attention to what you declare over this area of our city today.”
“We bless the many organisations that we can see already at work in this area – and we ask that each will flourish in their own right – bringing life to all who use these facilities, as they bless the whole city.”
“We ask that the development work will be totally completed, and that we will have no regrets”.
Care - St Peter’s Church plays a strong role in caring for those in need, and walking up Lister Gate reminds us that there is much need in our city! Let’s pray specifically for those who find themselves without a permanent home, and for the amazing work of Framework, Emmanuel House and other agencies.
“We ask for your help Lord – for all who are dealing with human need in Nottingham, and reaching out with compassion to offer help where it’s most required. Keep their hearts soft with compassion – Release resources that will support and empower – and may many precious lives find fulfilment and hope.
Urban Abbey prays regularly for the 7 main pillars of society in Nottingham – we highlight one focus for prayer each day, sending out the details on the Daily Bell. You might want to give the Daily Bell a try (you can always unsubscribe if it doesn’t work for you). Sign up at http://bit.ly/dailybell
